Moving Abroad Checklist There's so much that needs doing when planning a move overseas that a lot can get lost in the shuffle. Follow this handy checkist to keep your priorities organised Step 1 Step 2 Step 4 Step 3 Step 5 Start: Are You Sure About this? Start Uprooting your life and starting again overseas is a big commitment and may come as a shock to the system. Make sure you're ready for the move before you make it. Step 1: Do Your Homework Research your destination thoroughly. Visit expat forums, speak to others over there and try and visit beforehand if possible. Get a good feel for the area Step 1 Step 2- Research Local Law & Customs Step 3: Don't Rush Into Buying Abroad Step 2 Familiarize yourself with the local customs, don't get caught out Take time to learn the nearby area and see firsthand where you'd like to live. Don't rush into such a major decision. Step 4: Seek Step 3 Independant Legal Advice Don't feel under pressure to use your property developer's or estate agents contacts. Check the gov website and find an independant, English- speaking lawyer- it is vital they understand the law of the country you intent to live in. Step 5- Plan For Your Health Step 5 The rules for accessing healthcare are different than in the UK. Be sure to take out Health Insurance until you are registering in your country's state system Step 6: Consider Long- Term Finances Step 6 Read up on the impact of moving abroad could have on any benefits or refirement income received. BE realistic about the costs of living and don't assume they will be the same as at home. Be sure to research what taxes are applicable to you in your new home (as well as back in the UK) when you move Step 7 Step 8: Put Your Notice In Step 8 Before you leave you need to notify the Social Security Office, HM Revenue & Customs and The Dept. of Work & Pensions that you are moving overseas, as well as your GP.
