Monterey Bay Aquarium

O Monterey Bay Aquarium The Aquarium is perched on the edge of a world-famous coastline full of opportunities for discovery and exploration. The Monterey Bay Aquarium was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row along the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey, California. The Kelp Forest Discover an underwater forest-at 28 feet, the Kelp Forest is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world. You'll get a diver's-eye view of sardines, leopard sharks, wolf-eels and a host of other fishes as they weave through swaying fronds of kelp, just like they do in the wild. In a kelp forest, each towering kelp plant is like an apartment building, sheltering undersea creatures large and small. Sea Otters These playful icons of California's Central Coast shoreline and the Aquarium's most popular residents are still exploring their newly renovated two-story exhibit. The Jellies Experience The magical world of jellies - graceful, dancing drifters that pulse and glow, flash colorful lights and often pack a powerful sting - comes alive in all its psychedelic glory in this special exhibit. You'll discover over a dozen stunning species from around the world. The Open Sea In the Aquarium's largest exhibit, tuna and sharks speed past, sardines swarm in huge, glittering schools, and sea turtles swim lazily across the 90-foot window. Nearby, colorful puffins await their next meal, and brilliant jellies pulse through the water. 623 1.8 1t Largest exhibit in the Äquarium million million U.S. gallons different named species on display annual visitors Mar. 1985 Oct. 1984 April 1986 Sept. 1985 Only five months after opening its doors, the Aquarium greets its one millionth visitor.
