North-South new rail link: HS2, more than a railway

NORTH-SOUTH NEW RAIL LINK: HS2, MORE THAN A RAILWAY A DRIVER OF ECONOMIC GROWTH Congestion costs to UK economy to reach £36bn per year by 2025 Passenger numbers on the WCML have risen to 31 million from 13 million in 1997 and the line will be full by 2024? %3D HS2 "will have the same capacity as a new 12-lane motorway" Patrick McLoughlin? HS2 will bring a £15bn annual boost to the economy“ HS2 city regions will be boosted between £5.5bn and £7.8bn, more than double the £2.5bn to £2.8bn benefit in Greater Londons A complementary £37.5 bn of investments is planned by Network Rail in the period to 2019 alone in the existing network to ensure better connectivity HS2 will cost £42.6bn to build of which £14.4bn is reserve funding7 40,000 jobs for phase 1 (9,000 construction, 1,500 permanent, 30,000 in station redevelopment areas) The government is spending £73 bn on transport in the next parliament of which only £17 bn will be spent on HS26 Q. WHAT IS HS2? KEY DATES 2014 Phase 2 route consultation A. A high-speed railway network connecting northern England and the Midlands with each other and with London providing quicker journeys between our main cities and freeing up capacity on the current network for additional freight and local passenger services. 2017 Construction begins First trains start running between Birmingham and London 2026 2033 Phase 2 opens to passengers DIRECT ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF HS2 WITH HIGH SPEED TRAINS Alstom, the energy and rail infrastructure company, believes it could contribute to jobs, skills and investment in the north-south new railway. If it were successful in winning HS2's rolling stock contract it could have the following benefits: Q Glasgow Potential traincare centres Edinburgh The creation, Construction & or safeguarding, of around extension of traincare centres Newcastle Carlisle O 3,000 Indirect Jobs 1,000 Indirect Jobs O York Preston o Leeds O The creation, or safeguarding, of around Wigan Construction of O Manchester Warrington Manchester O Airport Sheffield Meadowhall a factory to build trains Liverpool a Runcorn Crewe East oO Midlands Stafford 1,200 Direct Jobs 200 Construction Jobs O Leciester Birmingham OO Birmingham Interchange Cardiff Old Ok Common Bristol Building new high speed trains Five traincare centres London Euston 500 Jobs 700 Direct Jobs Plus an investment, largely in the regions, of around £250 million IMPROVING DOOR-TO-DOOR JOURNEYS This new railway should not only enable long journeys to be made quickly, but also make it easy for passengers to travel on to local destinations via public transport. For example, Alstom is already delivering the Nottingham Tram Phase 2 extension - close to the proposed HS2 hub. East Midlands Hub Nottingham Derby Leicester Taking you door to door THE MANUFACTURER'S PERSPECTIVE Alstom is an international energy and rail engineering company with over 6,500 employees in the UK. Over one third of passenger rail journeys in the UK today are taken on Alstom built and maintained trains. The company built the Virgin Pendolino trains on the West Coast Mainline, and today has around 800 engineers keep them running. Alstom is responsible for ensuring London Underground's Northern Line metro trains operate safely and reliably everyday. During the 2012 Olympics, nearly 1 million passengers a day travelled on the service. The company is also a specialist in infrastructure, electrification and signalling work and is delivering a number of projects with its partners - including Crossrail in London. Alstom technology set the world speed record for rail in 2007 at 574.8 KMPH using technology based on the TGV. Today, Alstom's state-of-the-art AGV train is operating in Italy and is being used by the Department for Transport as the reference train for the north-south new rail link. 225 The AGV's electricity consumption and lifecycle cost is 15% lower than competitors The AGV is one of the fastest passenger trains in the world, with a top speed of 225 mph When fully loaded, the AGV is still lighter than an equivalent European high speed train when empty, lowering energy consumption Up to 98% of the AGV's components are recyclable Train lengths (from 1 to 3 train sets) are modular, as is the interior layout CO2 EMISSIONS PER PASSENGER KM 2.29 30д 115g 153g Produced by Politics.co.uk's VoiceOver service: www.politics.co.uk/voiceover Sources: 1.
