Limousines - Then And Now

Limousines Then and Now Since the beginning of 1700's, Limousines have given luxuriant and chic mode of transport for the rich and the famous. The name limousine was given in the honour of the historic Provence of France. Originally, horse-drawn carriages were considered to be a luxurious vehicle and the drivers riding it used to wear cloaks which were known as limousines. During modern times, this definition evolved and limousine came to be known as a luxurious saloon car having a strong wheel base and chauffeurs drove it. When the first limousine was built in 1902, it was designed in such a way that the driver's seating arrangement was under a covered compartment. In the year 1916, limousine was defined by the Society of Automobile Engineers as: "A closed car which can accommodate upto three to five passengers with a driver's seat out- side." A Berline was defined as "A limousine which has the driver's seat entirely inclosed" and a Brougham was defined as "A limousine not having any roof over the seat of a driver." By the year 1920, limousine had carved its niche in the automobile domain. In the year 1928, a stretch limousine was designed in Arkansas by a coach company known as Armbrust- er. Such stretch limousines were also known as 'big band buses'. During 1930-40s, people were keen and curious to watch limousines on the street and know who rode them. Limousine During 1970'S, limousines became bigger in size and its length was increased. Initially, the stretch limousines were designed by getting inspiration from the Lincoln Town Cars, and extra 10 feet was added to the chassis. In the 80's limousines got a lot of recognition and became synonymous with luxury and travel. During those times limousines were used for young professionals.
