IFTA Fuel Taxes

FUEL TAXES 2014 IFTA The INTERNATIONAL FUEL TAX AGREEMENT (IFTA) simplifies a complicated system of fuel taxes by putting them all in one location and distributing to the various states and provinces. Forty-eight states and ten provinces are part of this agreement. The taxes are collected based on where the fuel is used, not where it is purchased. They will take out what you spent in the lower tax state. SPECIAL CASES Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia These are fuel "surcharges" states. They keep a portion of the money they collect, if the fuel is used in or out of the state. BEST PRACTICE: Buy only the fuel you are planning on using in the state as you enter the state. Oregon Oregon does not participate in the ITFA program, but it does cooperate with other states that do. They track where the fuel is used for the benefit of companies that work in other states. BEST PRACTICE: Buy only the fuel you are planning on using in the state as you enter the state. Hawaii Hawaii does not participate in the IFTA system due to its isolation from the mainland. BEST PRACTICE: Enjoy the scenery. You're in Hawaii!
