Electric Cars: Should You Be Going Greener?

Electric Cars Facts & Figures Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) A combination of a standard internal combustion engine, with an electric propulsion system. This system works to improve fuel economy or increase the power and performance of the car. This type of car cannot be charged through an electric socket. Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Working in a similar way to a HEV, this type of car utilises the power of rechargeable batteries. It also has an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. This type of car is charged through an electric socket. Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) With no standard internal combustion engine, this type of car is 100% powered through electricity. It stores energy in rechargeable battery packs, which can be charged through electric sockets. Pros & Cons of Electric Vehicles The electric car market is booming. 2014 industry figures show 14,498 electric cars were sold in the UK compared to less than 5000 in 2013. Here we look at some pros and cons when considering purchasing or leasing an EV (electric vehicle). We've also taken the time to outline charging points in all major cities in the UK. Pros Cons You can quickly and easily recharge your electric car from your own home, with no need to find a petrol station. Compared to filling your car with petrol or diesel, it takes a lot longer to fuel an electric car. To charge a PEV vehicle, with a range of 100 miles, it can take up to six or eight hours here in the UK. Electric cars are cheaper to run. Electricity can be up to 1/3 cheaper than petrol or diesel, saving you money per mile. In order to charge your car easily, you will ideally have to have a garage. Otherwise, without a charging station at home, you will have to rely on charge points. The range on an electric car is far shorter, than one with a petrol or diesel engine. Most electric cars can only travel a distance of 100 miles, before needing to be fully recharged again. Electric cars offers a quieter and smoother drive With no tailpipe, electric cars don't pump harmful emissions into the atmosphere. This is good for the environment, as it improves the air quality for everyone. Electric cars tend to cost more to buy, with some new models costing as much as £25,000. Tax In the UK, fully electric cars are exempt from Vehicle Tax² As it is an emerging technology, there are fewer models of electric cars to choose from Parking In the city centre and charging up while you shop?
