A DRIVER IN FOREIGN LANDS Driving in a foreign country means a whole new set of rules and regulations for drivers, and first you must work out if your licence is valid or if you need to get an international driving permit. Some countries have additional regulations that must be observed as well. We have put together this handy guide to make those travelling outside of the UK aware of their destination country's legal driving requirements. Temporary local licence may be obtained on production of UK licence, but this may be time consuming and more expensive. IDP recommended. • If your UK driving licence does not incorporate a photograph, you must also have an IDP. IDP Recommended. • All valid UK driving licences should be accepted, but acceptance of licences that are not of the European Communities model cannot be gauranteed. Therefore, drivers should update them before departure. Older licences may also be accompanied by an IDP. • UK driving licences valid for 90 days. • IDP recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. Additionally, those licences which do not incorporate a photograph need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity. IDP must be exchanged for a local driving licence for a small fee.
