Covered Bridges of Oregon

COVERED BRIDGES of OREGON Covered bridges are an integral part of Oregon's history, thanks to less-than-ideal weather and a once-booming timber industry. 16 pedestrian traffic only Covered 50 bridges 34 open to traffic WHY ARE THEY COVERED? OLDEST NEWEST Drift Creek Covered Bridge Lincoln County (1914) Cedar Crossing Covered Bridge Multnomah County (1982) Because of the availability of high- quality timber in the area, engineers built many local bridges out of wood. The coverings protected the wooden trusses from rough Oregon weather that would otherwise deterioriate the timber in a matter of years. Thanks to the effectiveness of the covered trusses, many of these structures still exist for us to enjoy today. FUN FACT: Lane County has more covered bridges than any other county west of the Mississippi.
