We like to listen, but love to read. In a world of endless communication options it's easy to see why people have strong opinions about their preferred method of choice, particularly when it comes to text vs. voicemail. Nuance Communications commissioned a third-party survey to get a better understanding of how consumers prefer to stay connected and specifically determine the value proposition of voicemail vs. text messages. Here's what we found out. 82% are most likely to leave voicemails for family members above all others 58% receive 1-5 voicemails a week 57% are most likely to listen to voicemails from unknown/private callers 85% find text-based messages more convenient than voicemails 57% are contacted via text more than any other form of communication Opinions on voicemail 79% 27% say they are burdened by the prospect of listening to it when they find voicemail to be more personal than text- based messaging get a voicemail 61% 23% say they are anxious when they get a voicemail and worry that something is wrong say they like checking their voicemail 33% 19% say they are excited when they get a voicemail and are looking forward to listening say they are frustrated or annoyed when they get a voicemail to it Talk Text Personal, emotional, connected Immediate, concise, convenient Sharing bad news Sharing good news 80% 66% prefer to receive news from a close friend via text-based message rather than by voicemail are more likely to use voice rather than text-based messaging when sharing bad news Communicating with a customer Getting in touch with a significant other 74% 62% prefer to receive news from businesses via voicemail rather than by text-based messages of males prefer to receive text-based news from their significant other rather than through voicemail An emergency 58% 57% prefer to receive text-based messages from their significant other than voicemails say it is perfectly acceptable to leave a voicemail when making an emergency call V2T technology: The best of both worlds Voicemail-to-text turns voicemails into text messages or email messages that people can both read and listen to – whenever, wherever. Users are able to reply, forward or save these messages via text message or email. 62% would most likely switch to a voice-to-text messaging system from a traditional voicemail system 59% of 18-25 year olds would "absolutely" or "most likely" switch to a voice-to-text service if given the choice 52% say they would miss voicemail if it were eliminated 28% wish they had a voice-to-text service, but do not currently use one 13% use voice-to-text services and wouldn't have it any other way The Voicemail-to-Text survey findings included in this infographic were fielded by independent panel research firm, Research Now, and commissioned by Nuance Communications. Responses were generated froma survey among 1,000 smartphone consumers. All respondents were between the ages of 18 and 65 and living in the continental United States. The margin of error for the survey is +/-3.1%.
