Siemens Canada 100 Year Anniversary Timeline

A SHARED HISTORY Marking 100 years in Canada, Siemens has played a role in some of our country's most pivotal moments and powers our most iconic landmarks. BEFORE 1874 1912 CONNECTING CANADA TO EUROPE Siemens' presence in Canada starts shortly after Confederation with a cable line connecting the Old World and the New World. The Cable Ship Faraday lays Siemens telegraph cable from Ireland to Halifax and on to the United States. 1912 RANCOIS-XAVIER RUE SAINT-JACQUES FIRST FEDERAL CHARTER With offices in Toronto and Winnipeg under provincial charters, Siemens Canada Limited is federally chartered in Montréal on August 29,1912. 1912- 1960 POLICE Box 1913 FIRST TWO-WAY POLICE SIGNAL SYSTEM IN NORTH AMERICA Siemens supplies a new system of 158 telephone call boxes to the Winnipeg Police Department. The system remains in service for nearly 60 years. 1933 SAFER DIAGNOSTIC X-RAYS Siemens supplies the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Montréal with two Tuto Heliophos diagnostic x-ray machines. These shockproof machines are the first of their kind in Canada and are known for features that improve the safety of patients and medical professionals when in use. I 1967 1961 - 1980 SHINING A LIGHT ON EXPO '67 Siemens powers and illuminates the West German pavilion, as well as the underwater fountains and EXPO stadium. 1977 MOVING CALGARY The city of Calgary selects Siemens to supply its first Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) transit system. To this day, the system continues to provide transit service to the residents of Calgary. 1989 WORLD'S FIRST RETRACTABLE DOME STADIUM Siemens provides the complete electrical distribution and computerized roof control for Rogers Centre, formerly known as the SkyDome. 1994 FIRST CANADIAN SURFACE VESSEL TO REACH THE NORTH POLE The Canadian Coast Guard's icebreaker, Louis S. St.-Laurent, is the first Canadian surface vessel to reach the North Pole. Siemens products and technology played a significant role in the modernization of the vessel from 1988 to 1993. 1981- 2000 1994 LIGHTING THE CN TOWER OSR company, provides the illumination for Toronto's most visible landmark. M SYLVANIA LTD., a Siemens 1997 CANADA'S FIRST INTEGRATED RUNWAY LIGHTING SYSTEM Siemens installs the fully integrated runway lighting system at the Vancouver International Airport. FIRST FILMLESS 1998 HOSPITAL IN MONTRÉAL Using Siemens' system for medical imaging technology, Quebéc's Charles LeMoyne Hospital is the first completely filmless hospital in Montréal. 2007 LIGHTING CANADA'S NATURAL WONDER OSRAM SYLVANIA LTD. designs and installs a lighting system for illuminating Niagara Falls. Ten light sources shine through the waterfall, projecting every 2001- 2012 color of the rainbow. 2008 FIRST SIEMENS WIND FARM IN CANADA Siemens installs 44 wind turbines in Port Alma, Ont. 2010 INVESTING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY Siemens announces plans to open its first Canadian manufac- turing facility for wind turbine components in Tillsonburg, Ont. 2012 BIOGRAPH mMR CANADA'S Researchers in London, Ont. are the first in Canada to use Siemens' simultaneous MRI/PET imaging technology to study treatable mechanisms of brain damage caused by stroke and Alzheimer's disease. This new technology may aid physicians in determining the most beneficial therapies for reducing the burden of stroke and dementia among Canadians. 100 Siemens CANADA 1912-2012
