Mobile Phones in the Movies

MOBILE PHONES in the * * * * * * * * * * MOVIES Daniel Craig returns to the silver screen this year as 007 in Skyfall, the latest and some say greatest instalment of the James Bond franchise. Bond's smart phone of choice in Skyfall is the brand new Sony Xperia T, a top-of-the-range model featuring a stunning 4.6-inch screen and 13-megapixel camera. To celebrate the release of Skyfall and the Sony Xperia T, we've trawled through the movie archives to take a closer look at the part mobile phones have played in cinema, starting, surprisingly enough, in 1928... 1928 THE CIRCUS Was this the first mobile phone shot on camera? Charlie Chaplin's film shows what appears to be a woman talking into a device held to the side of her face.. 1954 SABRINA In 1910, an engineer from Stockholm Sweden named Lars Magnus Ericsson installed a telephone in his car. In the 1954 film Sabrina, Humphrey Bogart used a car phone, the first official use of a mobile phone in a movie. 1987 WALL STREET Gordon Gekko, played by Michael Douglas in the film Wall Street, used the Motorola DynaTAC - the big old brick of a mobile phone. It was also used by Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale, in the film American Psycho. 1991 ARRR! НОOK The black Micro 9800X mobile phone by Motorola can be seen in Hook, an American fantasy movie which is based on the characters of J. M. Barrie's popular book, Peter and Wendy. 1992 RESERVOIR DOGS Two Motorola mobile phones can be seen in the 1992 film Reservoir Dogs, the Motorola DynaTAC used by Chris Penn playing Nice Guy Eddie and the Motorola MicroTAOC used by Tim Roth playing Mr Orange AKA Freddy. 1997 THE GAME The world's first flip phone was launched in 1996 by Motorola. It was called the StarTAC and was featured in the psychological thriller, The Game, also starring Michael Douglas in the main role. 1999 THE MATRIX The Matrix used the Nokia 8110 mobile phone, a phone first launched in 1996. The spring loaded slider was never a feature of the original 8110 but was incorporated in a later model, the 7110. 2001 TOMB RAIDER The Sony Ericsson R310 was used in the film Tomb Raider, with Angelina Jolie famously playing Lara Croft. The mobile phone used in this film was designed for people with active lifestyles, which also fits in with the story of Lara Croft, an archaeologist and adventurer. 2003 THE MATRIX: RELOADED In the Matrix Reloaded, the SPH-N270 was used, a phone specifically designed for the movie by Samsung. It was a futuristic looking device to fit in with the theme of the film, but would not have been useful for users as it did not have many features. 2006 THE DEPARTED Two Motorola phones play a significant part in the Oscar-winning film The Departed (2006), an American remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The crime thriller shows the Motorola v600 and v710. 2009 THE PROPOSAL Sandra Bullock's character in the romantic comedy film The Proposal uses the Nokia E71 to keep her organised as a high level executive at a publishing company. 2010 DUE DATE Peter Highman, played by Robert Downey r., is a father-to-be who is desperate to be at the birth of his first born child when he is stuck with a complete stranger to travel from Atlanta to LA. In Due Date, Peter forms a new friendship with his travelling companion and the Blackberry Bold 9000 is featured frequently in this movie. 2011 OLIVE Olive, a story about a girl who uses her magical powers to get 3 lonely people to enjoy life again, was the first feature length film to be shot entirely with a smartphone. The Nokia N8 was hacked in order to get the desired visual effects for the film as features like auto-focus needed to be turned off. 2011 MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL The Apple iPhone 4 is featured prominently in the fourth film of the Mission: Impossible series, Ghost Protocol. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in this action film as an agent of the Impossible Missions Force. 2012 JAMES BOND SKYFALL The Sony Xperia T will be the mobile of choice for James Bond in Skyfall, the latest instalment of the Bond franchise, which hits UK screens in October and the US from November.
