Microsoft Kicks off Public Safety Symposium with Focus on the Cloud

Japan Earthquake - March 2011 Hurricane Ike - September 2008 The city of Houston's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) used Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft SharePoint Online to set up a hosted email and information collaboration solution, enabling employees to coordinate response functions until the EOC could get its own network up and running. Following the earthquake and tsunami, Digital Office [Japan] Inc. released "J!ResQ", a solution built on Windows Azure that enables people to inform friends and family of their current locations with mobile and smartphones. Microsoft also made its cloud-based disaster response portal and full suite of online services available to governments, nonprofits, lead response agencies, customers and partners impacted or responding to the earthquake. Haiti Earthquake - January 2010 Through a Clinton Global Initiative Commitment. Microsoft and partners are providing Haitian schools with power, broadband, online identity, and low-cost computing access via Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 technology and Microsoft Live@edu. Microsoft is also working with the Inter-American Development Bank and Infusion to develop a Haiti e-government platform based on Windows Azure. Pakistan Floods - June 2010 The Pakistan government implemented Eagle Crisis Management Suite (which uses Microsoft SQL Server, Bing Maps and Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010) to coordinate the disaster response actions by synchronizing geospatial and textual information within a common operating picture. Costa Rica Floods - November 2010 The Costa Rica government used Microsoft Dynamics CRM Grants Manager solution accelerator, a cloud-based website, to track grant requests, evaluate awards and disburse funds to the most deserving applicants, thereby assisting an efficient and successful recovery. Australia Floods - January 2011 The Queensland floods business pledges website, built on Windows Azure, allowed the government of Queensland to receive and collate offers of assistance from businesses and private groups and match those to community needs. Chile Earthquake - February 2010 To enhance collaboration between the hundreds of government response organizations providing aid, "Connecting Chile" was created using Microsoft Office Live Meeting technology as a unifying platform. This enabled timely communication and planning that would have otherwise been nearly impossible. New Zealand Earthquakes September 2010 and February 2011 In addition to deploying a Windows Azure-based pledge coordination portal, Microsoft provided trials of cloud-based messaging and collaboration tools to any organization whose infrastructure was impacted by the earthquake. Microsoft Cloud Solutions in Disaster Response Situations In times of disaster, technology plays a key role in alerting emergency services, mobilizing a response and coordinating the humanitarian and recovery efforts that follow. Cloud-based solutions offer advantages in disaster response situations, including the ability to be deployed rapidly and scaled up and down as needed. With the help of partners, cloud-based Microsoft technologies have been a critical component of global disaster response efforts by breaking down communication barriers between governments, emergency services organizations and citizens. As part of an initial response, cloud technologies have improved public safety by enabling real-time communication, collaboration and data visualization, and by helping to efficiently distribute aid services where they're most needed. Note: This graphic includes a small sample of Microsoft's disaster response efforts since 2008 specifically highlighting events where cloud-based solutions played a significant role. Microsoft
