THE LIGHT BULR and LED A BRIEF HISTORY 1806 Humphrey Davy invented the first light bulb in 1806. 1879 Thomas Edison patents the carbon-thread incandescent lamp, which lasted 40 hours. 1880 Edison invents a 16-watt light bulb that lasts up to 1500 hours before burning out. 1907 The science of LED lighting, based on Electroluminescence is discovered by radio researcher, Guglielmo Marconi, and his assistant, Henry Joseph Round. 1926 Edmund Germer patents the fluorescent lamp. 1961 Robert Biard and Gary Pittman Accidentally created an infrared LED for Texas Instruments while attempting to invent a laser diode. 1962 Nick Holonyak Jr. develops the first practical visible-spectrum light-emitting diode. 1972 M. George Craford improved upon Holonyack's red LED, improving its brightness by ten times. The first yellow LED light is created. 1976 Thomas P. Pearsall invented a high-efficiency and brighter LED that was used in fiber telecommunications. 1981 Philips sells their first Compact Fluorescent Energy Saving Lamps, with integrated conventional ballast. 1989 CEEED Cree introduced the world's first blue LED, a landmark that paved the way for billboards and large video screens to produce full-color displays. 1991 Philips invents a fluorescent light bulb that lasts 60,000 hours. 1995 Shuji Nakamura at Nichia labs invents first white LED, which jump-starts the widespread use of LED light bulbs. 2007 Profits from the LED lighting industry rise to $5 billion annually. 2012 The LED lighting industry earns more than $14 billion. More than co 49 million LED products were installed in the U.S., saving about $675 million in annual energy costs.
