Heigh Ho To Waste, Hello To Urban Mining

HEIGH HO TO WASTE, HELLO TO URBAN MINING Roughly 45 million tons of e-waste is produced worldwide each year. The U.S. (the largest producer of e-waste on Earth) alone produces 2.3 billion pounds annually. Our electronic waste fills our limited landfill space and serves as long-term environmental and health hazards, but is also highly profitable. REASONS TO PROCESS E-WASTE Processing of electronic waste is important for the following reasons: RECOVER PRECIOUS METALS SAVE ENERGY DISPOSE PROPERLY PRECIOUS METALS INCLUDE: 515 phones recycled is the equivalent of a whole house, powered for an entire year E-waste consumes space Gold, Silver, Titanium, Iron, Tin Copper, Palladium and Nickel and leeches toxins into the soil, water, and air A TON OF SMARTPHONES 10 TROY OUNCES OF GOLD $15,500 (s1,580/troy ounce) = 100 kg of Smartphones A = Troy Ounce of Gold = $2000 A MILLION RECYCLED CELL PHONES CAN YIELD: A E-waste has 40-50 times richer concentrations of precious metals compared to natural deposits 35,274 Ibs of copper 772 Ibs of silver 75 Ibs of gold 33 Ibs of palladium The world's annual A 350g of gold could be extracted from 1000kg gold supply increased by 15% from 2001 – 2011 BUT price per ounce also increased from below $300 to over $1,500 of PCBS (printed circuit board) found in OR from mobile phones. RECOVERY METHODS There are many methods of extracting gold from gadgets. Here are some common methods: BURNING This simple process uses AQUA REGIA an extractor to isolate the gold from a device The method can be used in large scale as it can dissolve gold BIOLEACHING It is important to remember to have proper ventilation to let out poisonous gas released by the mix. Not advised since devices are made up of plastics and other materials that will produce toxic fumes when burnt. Microorganisms are incorporated in this process. Chromobacterium violaceum, for instance, helps in recycling metals. CYANIDE REVERSE ELECTROPLATING The process leaves the environment contaminant-free and is considered the Cyanide bonding with gold forms gold ions, which can eco-friendliest way to extract gold from a device. By adding a battery, the gold is added to the siphon and later extracted then be distilled to obtain the gold. The process involves live electric current and produces several toxic, carcinogenic chemicals. Cyanide is highly toxic, the process isn't simple, and should be left to professionals. INDUSTRIAL PROCESSING On an industrial level, there are three main steps in e-waste processing. Collection 2) Dismantling 3 End Processing • Generally a manual process • Occurs at the regional or national level · Expired equipment are dismantled at collection facilities • Further processing of non-metal and metal e-waste fractions • Individual components are tested and isolated from e-waste • Recovers valuable components through metallurgy processes (hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy). • Mechanical processing is integrated to shred e-waste scraps into pieces Every year the U.S. discards $60 million worth of gold and silver. Overall (for developed and developing countries a like), only 10-15% of gold is recovered from e-waste; 85% is lost. sisifa The scientists at the NATIONAL METALLURGICALLAB in Jamshedpur have finally developed an eco-friendly process of extracting gold from devices. Metals can be selectively extracted without causing any damage to the environment. NDIA - D The demand for metals is high, while the supply for production is decreasing - e-waste recycling and processing is the only way to sustain our technological needs. Soon enough, sufficient funding will be provided for larger scale processing, but we shouldn't wait for the waste situation to become more inconvenient in order to have more convenient recycling options. www.facebook.com/eCycleBestOfficial eCycle Best f Like Us 84 Coney Island Drive Sparks, ŃV 89431 www.eCycleBest.com y Follow Us www.twitter.com/eCycleBest1

It's ironic that electronics expenses creates electronic waste, while reducing waste by recycling is can generate large sums of money. Find out exactly what we waste and how much of it.
