Data Science 2015: What's Hot and What's Not

Data Science 2015: What's Hot & What's Not Chief Data Scientists (CDS) Chief Information Officers (CIO) CIOs were traditionally the keeper of all things "information," including IT purchasing decisions. In 2015, we think Chief Data Scientists will hold the purse strings when it comes to key IT buying decisions related to their company's data. Integrated data scientists Standalone data scientists In 2015, a growing number of companies will provide individual departments and teams with their own “in-house" data scientist instead of keeping their data science team cloistered as a separate department. Open data Warehoused data Next year will bring about a breakthrough when open data becomes the new open source powerhouse as industries across the board begin unlocking their data troves to the public. We believe the burgeoning open data will be the new open source. Rich data Big data With big data, it's all about the quantity-the more the better. Sometimes, this makes companies short-sighted when it comes to finding value hidden within all that data. In 2015, rich data-the volumes of data that have actual relevance is what companies will rely on instead of big data to drive growth. Data for social good Data (just) for profit According to IDC, big data is expected to grow into a $16 billion industry. While there's certainly money to be made in big data, we think data will be driving the next wave of social consciousness from providing disaster relief support to helping philanthropies fulfill their charitable missions. %$4 Data of Everything Internet of Things The Internet of Things isn't going away, but the real value isn't the next smart device du jour. It's going to be derived from the data that is aggregated on every single connected device. Everyone loves data Geeks love data •S.??:? As data becomes more accessible and analytical tools become easier to use and readily available, data science won't be limited to those in the technology sector. In 2015, anyone with the right tools can draw powerful insights from data. Data scientist with a BA Data scientist with a CS We're not blasting CS degrees but in 2015, data scientists' skillsets will be vastly different, especially as the ability to code will be less of a job requirement. Data scientists should take a page out of anthropology and understand that qualitative information can also provide answers to questions you didn't know you had.
