With this growth there was a need to have an accurate tracking system for inventory. After hearing about the need for a tracking system, Norman Joseph Woodland applied for a patent for his “Classifying Apparatus and Method" in 1949. The patent for the barcode was issued in the fall of 1952. SHIPPING INDUSTRY Federal Express, the package-shipping giant, is probably the world's biggest single user of the technology.
