THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BARCODE 56 789012 HOW IT ALL BEGAN Throughout the 30s and 40s the grocery industry was growing at a rapid pace. With this growth there was a need to have an accurate tracking system for inventory. After hearing about the need for a tracking system, Norman Joseph Woodland applied for a patent for his “Classifying Apparatus and Method" in 1949. The patent for the barcode was issued in the fall of 1952. EARLY APPEARANCE 1952 - 1960s THE FIRST BARCODE HAD ONLY 4 LINES SOME EARLY BARCODES WERE ROUND On June 26th, 1974, a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum became the first product logged in a grocery store by a barcoding system using the modern UPC code. MILITARY The U.S. Army has used two-foot-long bar codes to label fifty-foot boats in storage at West Point. HEALTH INDUSTRY Hospitals have their patients wear barcode ID bracelets. SHIPPING INDUSTRY Federal Express, the package-shipping giant, is probably the world's biggest single user of the technology.
