the 123s of Online Surveys So, you're thinking of making a survey, but it's your first time? No worries! Just follow our guide & you'll be fine. STEP (1 Define the purpose: Focused goals = focused results. Is it to sell more? Increase brand awareness? How are you going to use this data? Have a survey tool in place (you'll need to build your survey somewhere). Have a clear idea of who you are trying to reach and always build your survey with this audience in mind. STEP (2 Now, start thinking about what you want to ask. Here is an example to help: You're an HR company based in NY and you want to find out more about how businesswomen feel about their working environment throughout different cities in the US. Do they feel like they are being treated equally compared to their male counterparts? Wow, this is a sensitive topic, right? Well, there are plenty of horrible ways of approaching this topic in a survey. Let's see some of the worst examples we've actually witnessed. WRONG WAY RIGHT WAY 01 Sex: 01 Are you: boy O female girl male This is a tricky one. In some countries, 'gender' is preferred over the term 'sex', but it is also true that sex is a biological trait, while gender is self-identified. In short, someone could get offended, so make sure to know your territory. Or you could get smart and solve the problem like this. 02 02 How old did you turn on your last birthday? How old are you? For real?! You don't want your respondent to read a question five times before getting it. 03 03 Where do you live? Do you live in any of the following cities? select your city You probably want your question to be more specific than that. List the cities in which you want your respondents to live. Remember to give the option 'other when listing answers. 04 04 In which of the following sectors do you currently work in. Select one. Where do you have your employment? select your sector Nope, nope, nope. Clarity is king. You're only interested in reaching people in specific sectors, so list them. coffee break Let's take a short break now. This last question is crucial to our survey's success because, depending on this answer, people will be allowed to continue and complete our survey. Not all the women answering will be businesswomen, right? Here is where the Incidence Rate comes into play. "Incidence Rate defines the estimated percentage of people that will qualify for your survey based on the target group you select." 60% Let's say you're looking for Coca-Cola drinkers. Your Incidence Rate (IR) will refer to the estimated % of people who drink only that soda brand. According to the statistical sources this is around 60% of all soda drinkers. break is over O 05 |05 What is your personal monthly income? Following amounts in USD How much do you earn? O A lot Too little 0 - 1,000 5,000 - 7,000 Enough I work for free 1,000 - 3,000 7,000 > O A little 3,000 - 5,000 I'd rather not say Remember, this is a sensitive topic and questions should be asked in a more respectful manner. Also, the word 'earn' does not necessarily refer to income. 06 06 Being a businesswoman, you are always in a more uncomfortable economical position compared to your male colleagues. Are you happy with your current paycheck? In your current employment, would you say that you are satisfied with your salary? Yes Yes No No I'd rather not say l'd rather not say Be careful not to lead your respondent into one direction or another. These are called 'leading questions'. You wouldn't want to do that, would you? (This is also a leading question by the way :) 07 07 Does having a male king in a prominent social position affect you as a businesswoman? Do you think that having a male president affects your working life? Yes, very much O Yes, very much Yes, somewhat Yes, somewhat It makes no difference to me It makes no difference to me No, not much No, not much Not at all Not at all Seriously? There is no King in the US! Do your homework on the territory in which you are running your research. 08 08 As businesswoman, what do you think of the general attitude you As businesswoman, what do you think of the general attitude you receive from your colleagues? receive at work and outside? O I feel like l'm treated equally I feel like l'm treated equally I don't feel treated equally I don't feel treated equally O I don't have an opinion about it I don't have an opinion about it Be careful not to ask two questions in one. They might get two completely different attitudes from work and outside. 09 09 Do you own a pet? Forget about it! What? Think of the logical flow of questions you are asking.
