Timeline Of Michael Jordan HISTORY CAROL A Star is Born 1963: Michael Jeffrey Jordan is born in Brooklyn on February 17th, 1963. Greatness is Born As a sophomore, Jordan is cut* from the 1979: Varsity basketball team at Laney High School. Seeing Blue 1981: Jordan receives à full-ride scholarship to the University of North Carolina. A Tar Heel Legacy 1982: Jordan makes the game-winning jump shot in the NCAA championship game against Georgetown University. The Legend Begins On June 19, Jordan, now 21 years old, is 1984: drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the third overall pick. Rookie of the Year 1985: In his first year in Chicago, Jordan averages 28.2 points a game on almost 52 percent shooting and is named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Torching the Celtics 1986: On April 20, in a first-round playoff game in Boston, Jordan scores 63 points, a scoring record that still stands. Unfortunately the Bulls are swept in three games by the eventual NBA champions. Taking Flight In a hint of his high-flying ways to come, 1987: Jordan wins the Slam Dunk contest at the All-Star Game in Seattle in a thrilling display of ingenuity and athleticism A High-Flying Repeat In a thrilling showdown with Atlanta's 1988: Dominique Wilkins in Chicago, Jordan repeats as the Slam Dunk champion. He is named MVP of the All-Star Game, too, and later that year, after averaging 35 ppg. wins his first MVP award. Black Cat Erupts On March 25, Jordan begins a streak of seven 1989: straight games with a triple-double, scoring 21 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and handing out 12 assists in a 111-110 Bulls win over the Sonics. The Shot 1989: on May 7, with what is considered maybe the most famous shot in NBA history, Jordan knocks down the series-clinching jumper over Cleveland's Craig Ehlo in Game 5 of a first-round series against the Cavaliers. Beating the Cavs Again 1990: On March 28, Jordan again assumes the role of nemesis to the Cavs, scoring a career-high 69 points in an overtime win in Cleveland. He is 23-of-37 in the game (622) and makes 21 of his 23 free throws (91 percent). 'A Spectacular Move' On June 5, cutting through the heart of the Lakers' defense in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Jordan pulls off a memorable right-to-left hand-switching layup. Jordan scores 33 points as the Bulls win and even the series. 1991: Tasting Victory On June 12, Jordan and the Bulls finish off the 1991: Lakers to win the first of six NBA championships. Jordan is named MVP of the Finals, a nice bookend to his regular-season MVP award, the second of five he will win. A Dream Teamer During the Summer, Jordan joins several NBA 1992: Legends-- including future Hall of Fame class members, David Robinson and John Stockton -- to form the "Dream Team." The U.S. Olympic team wins the gold medal. KETEN Take II 1992: With a 4-2 win in the NBA Finals over the. Trail Blazers, Jordan wins his second NBA title and wins the Finals MVP for the second straight year, the first player ever to do so. He averaged 34.5 ppg in the Playoffs. Burning the Suns 1993: On June 16, Jordan scores 55 points in Game 4 of the NBA Finals (21-of-37), a 111-105 win over the Suns in Chicago. Triple Threat 1993: June 20: Jordan finishes with the highest scoring average in NBA Finals history, 41 points a game against Phoenix, as the Bulls win their third straight title. He becomes the first player named Finals MVP three years in a row. Hanging 'Em Up 1993: world and devastates Chicago fans, Jordan, On Oct. 6, in a move that stuns the basketball just 30 years old, announces that he is retiring. Fulfilling A Dream On March 31, Jordan signed a minor league 1994: baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox. The decision was made to pursue the dream of his late father, who had always envisioned his son as a major league baseball player. I'm Back' On March 18, after a dalliance with professional 1995: baseball, Jordan and the Bulls announce he will rejoin the team and play in the next day's nationally televised game against the Pacers in Indianapolis. The Double Nickel 1995: Donning the new 45,' on March 28, in his fifth game back from his two-year stint away from the NBA, Jordan scores 55 points on 21-of-37 shooting in Chicago's 113-111 victory at New York. The Big 7-0 Jordan scores 22 points as the Bulls drop the 1996: Bucks 86-80 to capture their NBA-record 70th win of the season. Jordan plays in every game that season and averages 30.4 points a game. Standing Among the Best 1996: Jordan joins several of his contemporarie and many NBA legends in being named one of the leagues 50 greatest players ever. The Legend Rises Jordan completes his first full season back in 1996: the league by leading Chicago over Seattle in the Finals. The Bulls win a record 72 games, Jordan wins his eighth scoring title, is named regular-season MVP, NBA Finals MVP and All-Star Game MVP. Dazzling the Stars On Feb.9, Jordan, a 14-time All-Star, records 1997: the first triple-double in All-Star Game histor with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the East's 132-12O win over the West in Cleveland. Battling Through The Flu On June 11, despite suffering from a serious case of the flu, Jordan pours in a heroic 38 points in a 90-88 Chicago win to give the Bulls a 3-2 series lead over the Jazz in the Finals. 1997: No. 5 1997: Two days later, on June 13, Jordan and the Bulls win their second straight NBA title --fifth overall by defeating Utah in six games. Storybook Ending 1998: Chicago wins its third straight NBA title and sixth in eight years behind Jordan's series-winning jumper over Bryon Russel. It is the second time in the decade the Bulls have won three consecutive titles. Walking Away 1999: On Jan. 13, for the second time in his now-storied career, Jordan officially announces his retirement from the NBA. For the Love of the Game Sept. 25: Jordan, now 38 and with six NBA titles 2001: to his name, returns to the NBA for a second time, agreeing to a two-year deal with the Wizards. Returning to Earth On Dec. 27, Jordan's streak of double-digit games 2001: ends at 866 games after he scores just six points in a Washington loss to the Pacers. Two days later, he will score 51 points against the Hornets. Leaps Over Wilt On Jan. 22, Jordan passes Wilt Chamberlain for 2003: third on the all-time scoring list when he scores his 31,420th point in a win against the Hornets. Riding Off Into the Sunset On April 16, the 40-year-old Jordan plays his 2003. final game in the NBA, scoring 15 points in a loss to Philadelphia. He finishes his career with 12 scoring titles and with a career average of 30.1 ppg, best in NBA history. Hall of Famer Without a doubt, the greatest basketball player 2009: who ever lived, Michael Jordan receied the ultimate honor, being enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame on September 11, 2009.
