WILLIE SHOEMAKER was the oldest jockey to ever win the Derby. He was 54 when he rode FERDINAND to win in 1986. 13 of the 15 riders in the first Kentucky Derby were AFRICAN-AMERICAN tttiiti AFRICAN-AMERICAN jockeys won 15 of the Derby's first 28 runnings.
