WILLIAM WEBB ELLIS CUP The trophy is named after William Webb Ellis, who legend has it caught the football and advanced it (against the rules) during a game in 1823 at the Rugby School. Only four nations have held the trophy: New Zealand (1987, 2011) South Africa (1995, 2007) Australia (1991, 1999) England (2003) There are actually two Webb Ellis Cups, the original, made in 1906 -- which is a copy of a 1740 trophy made by Paul de Lamerie -- In 1991, winners Australia nicknamed the trophy "Bill," a name that has stuck, and a replica created in 1986. It stands 15 inches tall and weighs 10 pounds. ALL BLACKS The New Zealand squad from 1987 is the only team to win every match by double digits on the way to claiming the Webb Ellis Cup. Competition for the Webb Ellis Cup begins the same way at each tournament, with a blow from the same century-old whistle.
