Honda's Return to Formula 1

HONDA'S RETURN TO FOMULA 1 WITH MCLAREN HONDA MUGEN-HONDA - 1993-99 Honda did keep its hand in F1 from 1993-99 under its Mugen tuning arm, supplying engines to privateer Footwork, Lotus, Ligier, Prost and Jordan teams in this period. 1992 Reign as champions comes to an end. Honda bows out at the end of the year. Gerhard Berger takes final win at Adelaide. 1996 Scores an unlikely victory courtesy of Oliver Panis' Ligier at the Monaco Grand Prix. 1988 Beginning of a formidable five year engine/chassis reign with McLaren. Four drivers' titles for Alain Prost and Senna. 1998 Just as popular, Damon Hill claims the last of his race wins and Jordan's first at Spa. 1987 Powers Lotus for two years, including a season with Ayrton Senna at the wheel. 1999 Mugen-Honda's strongest year with two wins and third overall with Jordan and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. 1984 Begins a four-year engine partnership with Williams which ends in 1987 (Mansell - Piquet). 1983 OFFICIAL ENGINE SUPPLIER - 2000-06 Begins F1 comeback as British based Spirit's engine supplier. After scrapping original plans to return as a constructor in 1999, Honda returns as engine supplier to Jordan and BAR. Honda would take BAR over in 2005 and proceed to compete as a full manufacturer outfit. ENGINE SUPPLIER - 1983-92 Honda returns to the Formula 1 fray after a 15-year absence from the sport as an engine supplier, gaining an iconic 71 Grand Prix victories by the end of 1992. 2001 Jacques Villeneuve scores BAR's maiden podium as Jordan's spell as top Honda customer comes to an end. 2004 Honda-powered BAR finish second in constructors' behind Michael Schumacher and Ferrari. 1968 Honda pull out of Formula 1 just one race into the '68' season following the death of its driver Jo Schlesser. HONDA RACING F1 TEAM - 2006-08 1967 John Surtees takes Honda's final victory for 39 years by winning the Italian Grand at Monza. Not a successful period with just one victory in three years; a moderately successful year in 2006 being followed by disappointing 2007 and 2008 campaigns. 1965 Richie Ginther takes first win for 2006 Honda at the Mexican Grand Prix. Button secures his first F1 win in Hungary, sparking a strong last half that takes Honda to fourth overall. 1964 2007 Debut season. Three races, no points 2015 McLaren Dismal year. Six points, only two more than customer team Super Aguri team. from American Ronnie Bucknam. 2008 MANUFACTURER -1964-68: 14 points. One podium achieved by Rubens Barrichello at Silverstone. Honda leaves F1. Begins development of RA271, first ever Honda F1 car, in 1962 when only two other teams (Ferrari and BRM) designed both engine and chassis in house. 2009 Jenson Button and Brawn GP win titles in Honda-designed BGP 01, albeit powered by Mercedes.
