A spectacular Ronnie Whelan volley secured a draw against Russia to leave the nation holding its breath against the Dutch in the final game in the group. Ireland held out until the 82nd minute before Wim Kieft's header spun wickedly beyond Packie Bonner to give Holland the victory they needed. They went on to win the tournament while Jack Charlton's Irish side returned home as heroes. Leland HOW IRELAND QUALIFIED Only lost one of their 10 games, winning six. A determined 0-0 draw away in Russia was the highlight as Trapattoni's side secured second place and a play-off against Estonia.
