CONCUSSIONS IN THE NFL brought to you by: While it was once seldom discussed, the prevalence of head injuries-concussions in particular-in the National Football League can no longer be ignored. The 2011 season saw an average of more than 10 concussions per week, and that's not counting ones sustained during practice of pre-season competition. Lawsuits have been filed by more than 3,000 former players who allege the league failed to warn players about the long-term dangers of suffering concussions, despite belng well aware of them. The Brain Injury Law Center brings you this graphic to raise awareness about the prevalence and dangers of concussions, which happen at all levels of football, indluding high school and Pop Warner. We are proud to do our part to prevent child head injuries by distrib- uting free bicycle helmets to children in our home state of Virginia. LAWSUITS ON THE RISE 3000, 75 2011 2012 HELMET SAFETY RATINGS Researchers at Virginia Tech have produced the first brand-by-brand, model-by-model ranking for the likely concussion resistance of helmets. A star-rating system modeled on crash safety rankings for automobiles, the rankings clearly identify the best and worst helmets. The lesser gold helmets displayed for a product, the greater risk of a con- cussion as compared to helmets with the most gold helmets as being the safest.
