Many have heard of the dangers of internet addiction, however, very few are clearly aware to just how addicted we are to social media. www.fix.com has created an infographic entitled “Is Social Medi...
a Bad for Your Health?” detailing just how addicted our society is to social media.
As of May 2013, 72% of adults used social media. The average user spends 23 hours a week emailing, texting, using social media, and other online communication platforms, which averages to 14 percent of their total week. 38 percent of adults admitted to checking their social media accounts before their email, and 67 percent believe they will miss something if they don’t stick with their social networks. Additionally, 50 percent of adults said using social networks like Facebook and Twitter make their lives worse, due to losing sleep, comparing themselves to others, anxiety when they can’t access their social networks, and even awkward work or personal relationships after a blow-up on social media. There’s no way around it: We’re addicted, and science backs it up. In fact, a study conducted by Harvard University revealed that during self-disclosure on social media, our brain activates the same part that is active during sex, eating, and receiving money. The same part of the brain that activates when addicted to a drug. And this addiction is not just in adults. Kids 15-19 spend an average of 3 hours a day on social media.
Think about what you could do if you cut your social media time in half. This infographic also details the amount of calories you’d burn if you slice your social media time.
