GRAPHIC DESIGN is not a logo. it is not a letterhead. it is not a business card. it is not photoshop, nor illustrator, or even indesign. it's definitely not gradients, blending, meshes, or layers. it is not brushes, fill colors, stroke weights or blending tools. taking a closer look, we know it is not helvetica, garamond, baskerville, or bauhaus. it is most certainly not (and never will be) comic sans, curlz, papyrus, or times new roman. it is not kerning or leading. graphic design is not ascenders, descenders, x-height, eyes, serifs, feet, san-serifs, or hooks. we know that graphic design is not the plastic wrap filter or the sketch filter or the neon glow filter. it is not picnik (thankfully) and thanks to some sweet genius not ms paint, microsoft word, microsoft publisher or powerpoint. it is not a mac, snow leopard, or osx. it is not margins, guides, white space, foreground, background, bringing it to the front, or sending it to the back. it is not a semi-colon, comma, period or ellipses. it is not dafont, istock, or google images. it isn't finding a photo on the internet and live-tracing it. graphic design is not the advertisements in newspapers, billboards, magazines, the internet, or even that obscure birthday card you get from your aunt every year. it is not bold, italics, underlining or small caps. it is not strike-through, fill, or outline. it is not modern, corporate, nouveau, vintage, minimalist, maximalist, conservative, bolds, pastels, or color families. it is not rgb, cmyk, pantones, or color palettes. it is not saving it on a hard-drive, usb, cd rom, dvd, or publishing it in print, web, or on your facebook. graphic design is not slapping text on a photograph and calling it art. it is not circles, squares, rectangles or triangles. it is not rotating, reflecting, or changing the opacity. it is not a jpg, gif, pdf, ai, or psd. it is not 17 pixels or 700 pixels. graphic design is not a brand, a slogan, a design brief, a mission statement, or even an icon. it is not a sketch, rough, comp, or final. it is not pre or post-press production. it is not a proof, plate, mock-up, nor is it a digital file. it is not a sketch book full of ideas or scraps of paper, or trashed mock-ups. so what really is graphic design anyway, then?
