Serving UNC students and the University community since 1893 The Daily Tar Heel VOLUME 11s, ISSUE 76 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2010 www.dailytarheel.com CONNECTING THE DOTS NCAA INVESTIGATION REVEALS ASSOCIATIONS When news broke in July that the NCAA was investigating North Carolina's football team, no one was quite sure what it would mean -UNC has never been the target of such an investigation. Since then, the investigation has gone in two directions, examining both improper contact with agents and academic misconduct with a tutor. Here's a breakdown of how it's all connected: PLAYERS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION Eleven players still are being investigated by either the NCAA or the University. UNC hasn't said which players are being investigated for agent issues, academic issues or both. The 11, many of whom were starters, did not play in the first two games and forced North Carolina to rework its depth chart. The players: (beginning aboe Butch Davis and moving clockwise) Charles Brown, Kendric Burney, Linwan Euwell, Brian Gupton, Ryan Houston, Greg Little, Michael McAdoo, Robert Quinn, Da'Norris Searcy, Jonathan Smith and Deunta Williams. CLEARED WESLYE SAUNDERS TO PLAY Of the players initially withheld from play, only three have been cleared to play: (from top right, clockwise) Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant and Shaun Draughn. Carter and Sturdivant were cleared Sept. 3 and Draughn was cleared Sept. 13. MARCELL DAREUS A former South Carolina player who was dismissed from the team this month for team rule violations. Saunders is a friend of Austin's and is said to have attended an agent party in Miami with him earlier this year. Alabama defensive lineman who went to a party with agents during a May trip to Miami with Austin. Dareus missed the first two games and had to repay $1,787 for receiving improper benefits from an agent. BUTCH DAVIS MARVIN AUSTIN Senior defensive tackle who is suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Austin's prolific tweeting is said to have caught the attention of NCAA compliance officials, and he is thought to have prompted many of nationwide NCAA investigations. Austin is said to have attended an agent party in Miami in the spring. Head coach Butch Davis is in his fourth year at UNC. His UNC teams have posted season records of 4-8, 8-5 and 8-5, and for the past two years have played in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Previously, Davis coached the Cleveland Browns and at the University of Miami. This year's seniors were freshmen when Davis took over the UNC program. He hired former associate coach John Blake. JOHN BLAKE GARY WICHARD DICK BADDOUR UNC's athletic director. Baddour was appointed to the position in 1997 and has been at UNC since 1967. Baddour oversees all athletics and was responsible for hiring Butch Davis. Former UNC associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. Blake coached the defensive line and recruited Austin out of high school when he was the No. 1 player at his position. Blake resigned Sept. 5 in the midst of the NCAA investigation. Sports agent who represents NFL player Kentwan Balmer. Wichard has described Blake as his close friend, and phone records show they communicated more than 150 times during a seven-and-a-half month period from November 2009 to June 2010. HOLDEN THORP As chancellor, Thorp is ultimately responsible for ensuring UNC's athletic department demonstrates institutional control. CHRIS HAWKINS Former UNC football player from the early 2000s who bought a jersey from UGA's A.Í. Green. The NCAA has since classified Hawkins as an agent. He is close with many UNC players, including Marvin Austin and Kendric Burney, and previously worked out at Kenan Football Center. Davis said Hawkins no longer works out at the facility after felony Cocaine trafficking charges against him were revealed. KENTWAN BALMER Former UNC football player who is represented by Gary Wichard. Cam Thomas told The (Raleigh) News & C Balmer paid for him and Austin to visit a training facility in California in 2009. TUTOR Observer that UNC is investigating whether a female tutor improperly aided one or more football players. The tutor used to be employed by UNC in the Academic Athletic Support office but is no longer. UNC has not released any more information about the DREW DAVIS At one point the tutor worked with head coach Butch Davis' son, Drew, a 17-year-old quarterback at East Chapel Hill High School. WILLIE PARKER woman. Former UNC running back who is close friends with Hawkins, Parker played for UNC during the John Bunting era but still has ties to the area, including a home in Durham. ELAINE MARSHALL HONOR COURT Information from the University's investigation will be passed along to the student attorney general's staff, which will decide whether to seek sanctions against any individuals through the student-run Honor Court. Sanctions for a convicted academic offense call for a Secretary of State Elaine Marshall. who is also the Democratic challenger to Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), has launched her own investigation into whether players had improper contact with agents. A.J.
