Who Is The Next Generation of Scientists?

WHO IS THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS? THE GENDER DIVIDE A total of 505,435 science and engineering bachelors degrees were awarded in 2009. While STEM fields are often thought of as male dominated, women have started to level the playing fields in several key subjects, earning half or more of degrees. FEMALE MALE PHYSICS PSYCHOLOGY σε1% Q19% ởʻ23% Q 77% The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students of today are tomorrow's scientists. They're the future disease curers, bridge builders, space explorers, and in many STEM fields, they're nearly half women. In the past decade, the number of degrees that women earned at all levels has steadily increased, which will help close the STEM gap in America's workforce. Women still have fields to continue growing, but supporting women in these fields is one way to insure a steady pipeline of bright scien- tists to lead the future of American competitiveness and innovation. But both women and men have made strides in the number who hold STEM bachelor's degrees. d' 82 Q18% Ở 49% Q 51% ALL STEM DEGREES Percent change of STEM bachelor degrees awarded from 2000-2009 SCIENCE OVERALL O+28x 0+28x 250,742 / 254,693 2010 TOTAL DEGREES ENGINEERING OVERALL d-22% O +4.4% O 53% Q47% 57,850 / 12,750 POLITICAL SCIENCE/PUBLIC ADMIN ENGINEERING BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES d.50% Q +54% σe2 Q18% Ở 40% Q 60% 27,184 / 28,135 CIVIL ENGINEERING O+38% 10,032 / 2,755 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING O-5% -32% -14,578 /-1,606 BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Ở+28% O +35% 34,477 / 51,097 OCEANOGRAPHY -24% SOCIAL SCIENCES CHEMISTRY -79 / -63 d'46% Q 54% ở 50% Q 50% SOCIAL/BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES Ở+37% 9:33% 94,977 / 157,944 SOURCES: Science and Engineering Indicators, 2012, National Science Board Educational Attainment, 2010, U.S. Census Bureau MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCES 23x GOOD University of Phoenix -14% A COLLABORATION BETWEEN GOOD AN HYPERAKT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX. 9,237 / -13,865
