WHO IS THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS? THE GENDER DIVIDE A total of 505,435 science and engineering bachelors degrees were awarded in 2009. While STEM fields are often thought of as male dominated, women have started to level the playing fields in several key subjects, earning half or more of degrees. They're the future disease curers, bridge builders, space explorers, and in many STEM fields, they're nearly half women. In the past decade, the number of degrees that women earned at all levels has steadily increased, which will help close the STEM gap in America's workforce. Women still have fields to continue growing, but supporting women in these fields is one way to insure a steady pipeline of bright scien- tists to lead the future of American competitiveness and innovation.
