Moons of the Solar System

Moons of the Solar System As of November 2014, there are 180 known natural moons orbiting planets in our Solar System. 172 moons orbit the "full-size" planets (Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), while 8 moons orbit the smaller "dwarf planets" (Pluto, Haumea, and Eris). The ten biggest moons in our Solar System are, from big to biggest, Oberon, Rhea, Titania, Triton, Europa, The Moon, lo, Callisto, Titan and Ganymede. Scott S. Sheppard is an astronomer in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution for Science, and has been involved in the discovery of more moons than anyone else in history - 48 for Jupiter, 25 for Saturn, and one each for Neptune and Uranus.
