Inside The Large Hadron Collider

INSIDE THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER CIRCUMFERENCE: Scientists are conuinced that the Large Hadron Collider will provide them with details of what went on at the moment of the Earth's creation. But what exactly is the LHC? Here are the major facts. 27km O Max speed: up to o.999999991 times the speed of light, more than 11,000 times per second. LARGE: HADRON: COLLIDER: the biggest and most powerful particle accelerates protons or ions, types of hadron. particles make up two beams that travel in O cllisions per second: 600 million (est) accelerator in the world. opposite directions and collide at four points. O At full energy, each of the two proton beams in the LHC. Operating temperature: -2713°C, colder than deep outer space (around -2705°C) Uses enough o.007 mm thick, superconducting niobium- titanium filaments, (10 times thinner than a human hair) to stretch to the Sun and back more than five times ..O Two nanograms of hydrogen are accelerated each day. It would take approximately one million years to accelerate : gram of hydrogen Pressure in beam pipes is approx. ten times lower than on the Moon. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), a detector, uses a huge solenoid magnet to bend the paths of particles from collisions in the LHC. The magnets of the CMS contain more iron than the Eiffel Tower - around 10,000 tonnes. DEPTH: 175m to 50m Major experiments at the LHC produce enough data annually to fill around 100,000 DVDS.
