United States Flag Laws

A country’s flag is a source of great pride for its people, whether it’s being flown high on a nation holiday or waved proudly at an international sporting event. This is certainly no exception in the United States. Throughout the country’s history, the American flag has become just as much a part of the American identity as baseball, apple pie and fruited plains. The American flag is, in fact, so much tied to the nation’s image that its care and treatment are regulated by law. These range from the simple rules of respect (don’t desecrate the flag by marking it up) to the slightly more specific (the proper procedure for raising a flag to half-mast). This infographic breaks down all of these laws, and also takes a look at how the American flag has evolved throughout history, from 15 stars at the beginning to the 50 we know today.
