Summarizing Documents [INFOGRAPHIC]

SUMMARIZING DOCUMENTS E DEFINITION Summarizing, i.e. condensing or making shorter a lengthy document, is often required. Summarizing allows readers to understand the overall gist and main ideas of a lengthy document rather than having to read through the entire thing. This is especially useful for people who are always busy and do not have time to read a lengthy document due to tight deadlines or other commitments. It is also useful in that you can read the summary of a long document to decide if you are interested and want to read the whole thing or not. Another word for a summary is abstract. This is commonly found and used in academic research papers to get the readers to know what the research topic is about. Instructors often refer to a summary as a review, meaning to provide an outline or summing up the main ideas. TIPS A useful tip for those who are just getting into the act of summarizing is perhaps to take the main idea or topic sentence of each paragraph. Paraphrase by using your own words. Do not copy the content word for word. Provide the main points of the original document and keep it as concise and brief as possible. Only provide the facts as they are presented in the original document. Do not provide your own interpretation or analysis in your summary. Don'tinclude your opinion while summarizing Avoid long, complex, and run-on sentences. Keep your sentences short and simple. in Don't forget to share, and visit our website http://www.danatranslation.com
