Population of the Dead

"How many people have ever lived?" The numbers in this piece are highly speculative but are as accurate as modern science allows. It's widely accepted that prior to 2002 there had been some- where between 106 and 140 billion homo sapiens born to the world. The graphic below uses the conservative number (106 bn) as the basis for a concentric circle graph. The red dot in the center is scaled to represent how many people are currently living (red) versus the dead (white). The vertical line represents time. The spectral graph immediately below shows the population 'benchmarks' that were used to estimate the population over time. Adding up the population numbers gets you to 106 billion. The two spheres are then used to compare against other numbers. 1850 A.D. 4,046,240,009 1995A.D. 1650 A.D. 5,427,305,000 1200 A.D. 12,782,002,453 births 1900 A.D. 26,591,343,00 births 2,900,237,856 2000 A.D. 1 A.D. 1750 A.D. 983,987,500 46.025.332.354 births 31,71,931,513 1950 A.D. prior to 8,000 B.C. 3,390,198,215 1,137,789,769 births POPULATION OF THE DEAD 106 billion The estimated number of people who have ever lived. 6.8 billion The current world population 4.1 billion Total dead during the 20th century from all causes. 170 million Estimated number of people killed in the world's many genocides. 5.5 billion The combined number of people currently iving in Asia, Africa, and Latin America make up 80% of the world's population. 3.8 billion are in Asia alone. 10 billion The hypothetical maximum 'carrying capacity' of the earth based on current trends, known resources and existing technologies. The world population is expected to reach this size around 2050. 200 million Estimated number of people killed in all the wars of the 20th century. 500 million Estimated dead from small pox, the deadliest plague humanity has ever known.
