The impact of PLAN'S DISASTER EMERGENCY FUND IN ASIA Asia is the most disaster-prone continent in the world, home to 9 of the top-10 countries with the largest number of disaster-related deaths. Source: In Focus: Disaster Risk Management, Asia Development Bank, 2011 THE FUND IN NUMBERS Set up by Plan Sweden in 2008 In 5 years, 27 humanitarian project activities (each approved within 24 hours) were funded in 12 countries • Bangladesh • Cambodia • China • India • Laos • Myanmar • Nepal • Pakistan • Philippines • Sri Lanka • Timor-Leste • Indonesia reaching at least 270,000 people This included the response to 1xA 6x 10x VOLCANO ERUPTION CYCLONES/TYPHOONS FLOODS From smaller emergencies like flooding in the Delta region of Myanmar affecting 6,000 people... ..to large, devastating disasters like Tyhpoon Bopha in the Philippines affecting 6.2 million people.
