Facts About Cranes The earliest known crane was 4,000 years ago and called the shaduf. This was used in ancient Egypt to move water and is štili used today in some areas. These massive machines got their name from the tall, long legged and long necked bird that are the flying birds in the world. The very first human made crane was made to lift very heavy construction materials. Dating back to 500 B.C. we have gathered enough evidence to conclude cranes were used to create Greek wonders. In the first century human and animal force was used to power the cranes. This then allowed them to lift heavy loads. In the early 20th century intemal combustion enguines were used to power the cranes and the cranes themselves were being made out of a stronger material called šteel. Lots of politicians started their careers as crane operators. Anna Walentynowicz was a crane operator ín Poland and founded The Solidarity Free Trade Union in the fight for better working conditions.
