sochi.ru 201y QUILTING WINS GOLD AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS Each patch below symbolizes an important piece of Russia's vibrant past Take a closer look to see the meaning behind each of the symbols represented at Sochi. PALEKH MINATURE These lacquered miniatures are made of tempera on paper-mache, and originated in the Palekh Village. PAVLOVSKY POSAD'S SHAWL This shawl, named after a small Oblast town, gained popularity when local merchants organized its mass manufacture. KHOKHLOMA Is one of the most well-known images of Russian Art. It presents decorative patterns on wood in red and black against a golden background. KÖBAN PATTERNS. The Kuban patterns adorn traditional Russian dress, and are said to protect the wearer from evil spirits. VOLOGDA LACES These lace patterns are called "the frozen paints of northern winter," and became popular across Europe around the 18th Century. YAKUTSK PALTERNS Yakutsk patterns serve as protection against evil spirits and traditionally identified a woman's age, marital status, number of children, and material possesions. -•GHEL Cobalt oxide develops an intense blue color, distinguishing these Gzhel porcelain utensils. KUBACHI PATTERNS Kubachi people created this artistic metal processing in ancient times, and used it in everything from weapons to jewelry. ZHOSTOVO PAINTING The Zhostovo factory garnered global recognition for these realistic floral masterpieces on simple metal trays. ORUSSIAN CALICO Slabic tribes have been manufacturing the components for Calico since ancient times. RAKULKA PAINTING The graphic style of Rakulka painting consists of a blossoming branch at top, a bird in the middle, and a tulip at the bottom. MEZEN PAINTING Mezen is a region in Northern Dvina. Boxes were widely spread along the Pinega River and exported to other villages. The patterns are very close to the ancient rock paintings in North of Russia. UETTIGA PAINTING The people of Upper Uftjuga made these small cylindrical birch boxes with lids. 0.NESHAPED CARVING Carving is a traditional craft of Russian peasants, which helped them through the endless winter evenings. NORTHERNDVINA PAN NG The pattern was created in the 2nd half of 19th Century. Sleeves, collar, cuffs, and lower parts of the dress hem were traditionally decorated with and were even said to protect the owner from evil spirits. RUSSIGN OLYMPIC QUTFIT PATTERN This Firebird feather design adorns Russia's Olympic team, signifying luck and well-being in Russian folklore.
