The History of Marriage

The History Of Marriage Over the years we have seen many changes in relationship culture, marriage especially. Marriage is a socially or ritual union between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them. The definition of marriage is different in many cultures... In this infographic we explore how marriage used to be. IN ANCIENT TIMES Ever since the Garden of Eden, rather than accept God's definition of marriage as a one man, one woman relationship, man has attempted redefining what marriage through their laws and customs. This redefinition of marriage has changed from culture to culture and across time. "The Laws allowed people to marry their own brother or sister!" "Prospective brides were put up for bidding." Babylon Egypt In ancient Egypt marriage was viewed as a special relationship between two people, one being male and the other female. In Babylon, marriage was a relationship set up through a contract. Prospective brides were put up for bidding. When the bride was purchased by the highest bidder, the mar- riage contract was written. The laws allowed people to marry their own brother or sister. In allowing marriage between family members, wealth remained concentrated within a few families "Their laws allowed for justifiable homicide anyone caught in adultery with the wife" Hebrews Greeks "Their laws specified who could and could not be married" The Hebrew culture by contrast established a different type of marriage laws. Their laws specified who could and could not be married. Their laws allowed for justifiable homicide anyone caught in adultery with the wife. Such laws may explain why refer- ences to divorce in ancient Greek culture are rare. Europe "...marriage occurred when you either by purchased or captured your spouse" The northern cultures of Europe took a different approach to marriage. For these tribes and cultures, marriage occurred when you either by purchased or captured your spouse. "the founders of Rome cap- tured and raped the women from the neighbouring Sabine tribe" Rome Despite the violent beginnings of their culture, Roman society had many laws respecting the relationship of marriage and protecting the property involved. SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT MARRIAGE HISTORY "Rutgers anthropologist "Biblical men often had Robin Fox has estimated "early marriage was seen as a strategic anywhere from two to thousands of wives." that the majority of all marriages throughout history were between alliance between families, with the first and second cousins. youngsters often having no say in the matter." "Mutual attraction in marriage wasn't important until about a century ago. In fact, in Victorian England, many held that women didn't have strong sexual "In many early cultures, men could dissolve a marriage or take another wife if awoman was urges at all" infertile." OPINIONS OF HOW MARRIAGE HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS "I think all relationships have turned a bit more materialistic and physical O compared to how they used to be 100 years ago." "Marriage has changed over the years in many ways such as: legalisation of divorce, recognition of women's rights to own property in a marriage and elimination of polygamy." " Prior to 2004 in the United States, no state recognised same sex marriage. Some people did not think this is discriminatory since people can marry any unrelated adult they wish to, as long as they are of the opposite gender." Marriage is a failing institution. Sadly it probably won't exist much longer." "as marriage as a whole, wel.. look at the divorce rates." WITH THANKS TO YAHOO ANSWERS & ASK JEEVES Y!
