A Visual History of the Grill

A Visual History of the GRILL 500,00 0 B.C. Grilling began about 500,00 years ago, after a glorious heat source known as "fire" was domesticated. Yes, cavemen threw another shrimp on the barbie - only their barbie was made of sticks! 1700's The natives of the West Indies were quite the cooks. In the 1700's, Spanish explorers discovered the Taino Indians' practice of placing meat on racks over burning fires. The Taino Indians called this practice "barbacoa." 1800's As more Europeans and Africans migrated to the Southern US in the 1800's, racks were replaced with pits and smokehouses. 1897 Ellsworth B.A. Zwoyer of Pennsylvania applied for a patent for charcoal briquettes in 1897, but someone else caught on... 1930's ..the ambitious Henry Ford created his own charcoal briquettes in the 1930's, using wood and automobile parts from his factory. Ford then formed a company with his brother-in-law, E.G. Kingsford, called The Kingsford Company. KINGSFORD BBOBAG 1952 In 1952, George A. Stephen, of Weber-Stephen Products, invented the Weber Grill. He cut a metal buoy in half and created a dome-shaped grill, with a rounded lid. 1960's William G. Wepfer and Melton Lancaster invented the first outdoor gas grill in the 1960's. While working for the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company, Wepfer bought a basic charcoal grill and redesigned it using gas. Thus began the American pastime of the backyard barbecue – a tradition that's still a core part of kicking off the summer season. 1994 After boxer George Foreman won a heavyweight championship at age 45, he introduced the George Foreman Grill in 1994. With 100 million+ sold, he attributes his win to healthy eating and grilling. 2012 Modern-day grills have certainly evolved! The Viking Outdoor Series 42" Grill features 29,000 BTU stainless steel grill burners, a removable smoker box, a 120V electric ignition, and more. If you're ready for a serious grill investment, it can be yours for $7,298.00.
