In 2004, The University of Phoenix recieved $1,744,628,548 in Title IV Funds (Federal Student Aid). in 2010, the US Government is commiting $1.8 BILLION in federal funds to help rebuild schools in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. This loan would end up costing over $28,000: $10,000 private loan, interest rate of 9.24%, 15 year repayment term. In Los Angeles, the average health care support worker can expect to a yearly salary of about $28,810. Barmak Nassiran, traditional schools lobbyist, estimates half of the default on all education loans are students studying at For-Profit colleges. For-Profit students represent only 10% of the total student population. Estimated Repayment Rates for For-Profit Colleges: Percentage students who repay their loans on time. 52% Grand Canyon 45% Ashford University 44% University of Phoenix 40% Post University 39% American InterContinetal University 27% Kaplan University THE FUTURE Barack Obama: Every American will need to get more than a high school diploma, and by 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. America will need the online schools sector to grow and cater to the large influx of future students which the traditional schools will not be able to handle. As of August 5, 2010, over $89,000,000,000 of Recovery Act funds have been released for education. Much of that is spent towards expanding higher education through traditional schools and online schools. Traditional public instutions are now adding online courses. As of 2007, 970 public 2 year colleges and 534 4 year colleges offer online courses. With more tax dollars spent on higher education, more oversight will be given towards online universities. Department of Education regulators are negotiating new rules like Gainful Employment. The Gainful Employment ruling requires students be able to find jobs that pay them enough to sufficiently pay back their school loans. This new rule will only be applied to For-Profit schools and some vocational programs at other colleges.
