The future of cities

Space as Cognitive Agents - 2030 In an increasingly complex data driven world laden with devices, homes of 2030 will change the way people interact with their built environment through embodied computation. Architecture becomes an interaction interface. User Persona Satya, 24, lives with her parents, is a single child, a computer engineer by training and a hardware hacker by choice. She is an open source hardware evangelist and keeps shuttling between various parts of the city to advocate the merits of open source in conferences and technology symposiums. She works from home and consumes humungous amount of information on the internet and is an active member of the open source community. In her spare time, she loves to play the sitar, and read Indian literature. She is health conscious and goes to the gym regularly. SSS www. She aims to be at the forefront to usher the Indian technology community towards a tinkerer culture. .... User Scenario - 2012 Some moments of a day in the life of Satya, who is back home after a conference: "She is again reminded of the instructions by her gym trainer that she should avoid eating rice, but can't do anything about it, as her mother forgot that, and she is too tired to cook something for herself". "As she wraps up her meal, she is constantly bugged by her smartphone beeping of new mails that are waiting for her to read and respond. This is not a very high pressure job, but the pressure to excel is something she has taken on her shoulders voluntarily". "She decides to take the coffee in her balcony, to sit, relax and sip her coffee. Its drizzling outside and she loves the scent of wet earth and the mild breeze that is wafting outside. This is one of the times when the air is bearable enough to breathe in and relax, otherwise, her apartment complex, which is just stuck to a main busy road, doesn't get enough fresh air during the day". "They wrap up for the day, but it's still a long way for Satya. She will now work for four-five hours more responding to emails and working after which she will have to settle with a book again, as its increasingly becoming difficult for her to fall asleep". Contrary to popular belief, in 2030, devices will converge, not into another smart device, but into architecture itself! Tectonic Surface Sensing Core Singular Responsive Core ... .• Computing Core Entity Cognitive Agent Tectonic Surfaces made up of smart materials that can bulge, shrink, change color or temperature. This surface is directly influenced by the responsive core. Sensing Core consists of an array of sensors taking data such as temperature, wind pressure, pulse rate, humidity or pressure. Responsive Core consists of actuators which react to the impulse provided by the computing core. Computing Core is the brain of the cognitive agent. It monitors sensor data and sends impulses to the responsive core to react appropriately to stimuli. Based on the Buckminster Fuller's Tensegrity Structure User Scenario - 2030 Indoor Rock Climbing Wall as an extension of nature 3-Dimensional Social Data Visualization The cognitive space provides a multi-sensorial embodied experience to Satya as the wind pressure on the wall changes, the wall makes music for her based on her presence in the balcony. The rain has an effect on us, so the wall changes colors to welcome the raindrops and changes the ambient temperature of her room when she goes off to sleep Satya can now clearly see where her social data is growing. The globules form a 3D structure superimposed on the wall, which grows and shrinks along with the data that she is receiving on her virtual networks. The number of unread emails turns the leaves of the 3D tree red, and the activity on twitter makes them bulge out. The cognitive agents can shift their shape to form difficult terrains for Satya to climb and experience adventure and rigorous physical activity. The individual globules are non slippery and can sense Satya's pulse rate and blood pressure along with weight, to provide a comprehensive report after she is done with her exercise.
