ARE MEN & WOMEN STILL PLANETS APART? ASSOCIATE PRODUCER/DESIGN: OLENA SULLIVAN DỌC ZONE with AMarie MeDoneid The book Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus by American author and relationship counselor John Gray hit the shelves in 1992, selling more than 40 million copies and spending 121 weeks on the bestseller list. Its central metaphor - that common relationship problems between men and women are a result of fundamental differences between the genders - became a part of popular culture for over 20 years. But does this idea still hold true today? WOMEN VS MEN At 6 months there's no hormonal differences between genders. This lasts until puberty. At 1, boys and girls both prefer to play with dolls. The more we reinforce "girls are Like this, boys are like that" the worse this stereotype gets. A US study found that men who were doing equal housework and childcare to their female counterparts were less likely to miss work, less likely to drink or smoke, less likely to be on prescription medication, and they had sex more often. Women with University degrees do less housework than their male counterparts. Studies have proven that "increases in a wife's education, as a proxy for wage rate, tend to be associated with an increased share of housework for the husband." Hormonal differences between males and females make a difference in which brain diseases may affect them. Females usually deal more with depression and Alzheimer's Disease, while males deal more with Parkinson's and Autism. During the first few weeks of life, baby girls show a greater interest in communicating with others. One study showed 2-4 day old girls spent twice as long maintaining eye contact with a silent adult and longer with a talking adult than boys did. Boys showed a relative bias towards what they could see rather than what they could hear. Despite popular belief, men and women on average speak Post-secondary educated women speak 16,215 words a day, whereas men speak 15,559 - a trivial difference. the same amount. GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE It was once believed that advanced technology and growth in productivity capacity would invariably lead to increased leisure time for both sexes.
