Save $3,700 Challenge - April: Plant a Garden

THE SAVE APRIL $3,700· If you've never had a garden, and you have available yard space, you owe it to yourself to give gardening a try this year. Not only will you enjoy the beauty of your garden and the abundance of fresh produce it yields, but you'll also be able to save on grocery costs. Even better, many crops don't require chemical fertilizers or pesticides to do well, so your fruits and vegetables can be organic. CHALLENGE SAVE $10O THIS YEAR BY PLANTING A GARDEN Plant seeds are dirt cheap, and though a garden takes a bit of sweat and time, much of the work is concentrated around planting season, Maintaining the garden from there is mostly a matter of weed and pest control, which can be simplified greatly with proper mulching and fencing from the outset. (There's nothing worse than waking up to find your vegetable plants destroyed by rabbits or deer, so don't skimp on fencing and netting where necessary.) WHAT TO GROW Certain types of vegetables are more cost-effective to cultivate than others. Among the best options are tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, beans, squash and herbs. Tomato plants, for instance, may yield 10 - 15 pounds of tomatoes per plant, for a cost savings of $15 - $23 per plant, while beans can save you $7.50 per plant. You might also consider growing your own pumpkins and watermelons.
