Introducing Your Toddler to Your Newborn

THE DESIGN STRATEGIST presents: Introducing Your TODDLER to Your NEWBORN PREGNANCY PREP 1 Breaking the News + Preparing your Toddler SHOW + TELL Help your practical toddler connect the dots between her baby photos and your own bump. Show her how much joy a sibling can bring! INCLUDE YOUR TODDLER Prep for possible hospital meltdowns by bringing your toddler to any prenatal checkups and ultrasounds. PREP FOR GAME DAY Have a fun-filled plan for your toddler when the time comes. Like "Nana is coming to bake cookies and play games with you for a couple days!" THE INTRODUCTION The Hospital Visit + Family Welcome GREET TODDLER FIRST Think of how scary it might be to see mommy in a strange room, attached to machines with a "competitor" in hand. Instead, consider sitting in a regular chair and having open arms for your toddler before introducing her to baby. DOUBLE THE GIFTS Give your toddler a few small gifts "from" the new baby. Nothing fancy needed, the goal is to simply show that baby loves her. ACT "NATURAL" While adding another life to your family is certainly a significant event, remember how important routine is to your toddler, and do your best to keep things, "natural". HAPPY HOMECOMINGS Spreading the Iove + Attention TALK FOR BABY Help your toddler think of baby as a real person by explaining what you imagine the baby to be saying. Like, "When baby giggles it's him showing how much he loves you." SPREAD THE PRAISE When others bring gifts and show attention towards the baby only, politely include your toddler into the conversation by saying, "Yes, now we have two beautiful kids"! STAY CONSISTENT It's obvious by now that your toddler thrives on routine. Do your best to keep schedules consistent like bed, bath and story time. CONTINUED SUCCESS 4. Keeping your Family Happy for the Iong Haul LET TODDLER HELP Keep your toddler engaged in the new family dynamic by asking for her help, like feeding baby a bottle or putting baby's diapers in the trash. SHARE YOUR ATTENTION There will often be times when your toddler has to wait for your attention. When possible, exaggerate that baby needs to wait in front of your toddler to prove you don't have favorites. GO ON DATES Show empathy that your toddler has now lost much of your precious one-on-one time by going on special dates just for the two of you. Make a big event of ice-cream, dinner or a movie!
