How to Prevent Bullying in the Classroom

AHertz Furniture The School Furniture Experts 10 TOP TEN TIPS How to Prevent Bullying in the Classroom 1. Role Modeling Set a good example for your students. The personal connection between student and teacher is the best way to positively influence a child's values and behavior. 2. Oral Repetition Recite a Values Code every morning. The code could exemplify values such as honesty, respect, responsibility, self-control, hard work, self-respect, concern for others, tolerance, cooperation, fairness, forgiveness, courage and self-knowledge. Starting off each day with an oral reminder of our values sets the tone for the rest of the day. 3. Build Skills Incorporate social and emotional skill-building activities and lessons from day one. Teach and scaffold throughout each day. Encourage and praise pro social behavior: helping, taking turns, sharing, complimenting, etc. 4. Role Play Role play a bullying scenario. Let the students see what bullying looks like, and what effect it has on the victim. They will then better understand bullying and how to handle those types of situations if they ever have to. 5. Create a Safe Environment Cultivate a classroom in which students feel comfortable telling you when their peers are engaging in bullying behavior. 6. Be a Mediator Help the children to understand the conflict and to work through it! They need to verbalize their feelings to each other, and you need to be there to help guide the conversation. 0O 7. Community Meetings Classroom meetings with "an airing of grievances" can be very effective. Together as a community, discuss problems, solutions and consequences. 8. Literature Read age appropriate books about bullying and use them as a springboard for class discussion. 9. Communication Journals Students may be hesitant to share with a teacher that they are being bullied. The medium of writing often presents a safer forum for communication. Some students may open up more willingly through the written word about their own experience, or about issues regarding class dynamics. 10. Include Parents Parents play a critical role in preventing and stopping bullying. By being aware of their children's activities and always maintaining open channels of communication, parents can often detect a bullying situation before it gets completely out of hand.
