According to therapist & parenting blogger Brenna Hicks, children-especially teens-need the independence to flourish as individuals, but parents should still be aware of what's going on in their digital lives. Set up clear guidelines and regulations when it comes to device usage, so you know what content your child is absorbing. Now you must balace respecting their ability to find their place in society, and protecting them from unwanted influences. IT'S UP TO PARENTS TO GUIDE TEENS THROUGH THIS COMPLEX ISSUE. PROTECTING YOUR TEEN: EXAMPLES SHARED ACCESS Parents are within their rights to have access to their child's online and mobile information. THE MAJORITY OF TEENS SAY THAT THEY ARE CONFIDENT THEY CAN STAY SAFE ONLINE, BUT THE DIGITAL WORLD CAN STILL HAVE REAL LIFE CONSEQUENCES. CHILDREN NEED GUIDANCE TO HELP MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR MEDIA USE. COMMUNICATION IS KEY to keeping your child safe. Be active, be involved, and maintain an open, healthy dialogue between you and your teen.
