How to Boost Space in Your Home

HOW TO BOOST SPACE in your HOME Whether your home is small or large, chances are you'd still like it to be bigger. With a range of physical and psychological changes, you will be able to increase storage space and make your home appear much bigger than it actually is... PSYCHOLOGICAL TRICKS BOLD CEILINGS Whilst light walls are great for making a room look bigger, painting the ceiling in a bold colour can draw the eyes up and create the illusion of height. DON'T WASTE VERTICAL SPACE ΜΛΛΛ Make sure you hang shelves or artwork on walls to give the illusion that your room is larger - because eyes are drawn upwards as well as around a room. SMALL ROOMS DON'T ALWAYS NEED SMALL FURNITURE People often opt for several pieces of small furniture in a small room, but this can waste space! A large sofa can often make better use of space than smaller chairs. GO MONOCHROMATIC Rather than having a brightly coloured room, paint your walls with a light colour, and then give the visual effect of expansion by painting trims and details in differing shades of the same colour. An example of this would be by using white, off-white and light grey. DITCH THE CURTAINS Trick your eyes into thinking your home has more depth by getting rid of the curtains and cutting the 'distance' between you and the outside world. For privacy, use sheer white drapes. USE MIRRORS AND GLASS TO BOUNCE LIGHT AROUND You can make a small space seem large by making use of natural light. Mirrors, glass tables and art in glass frames are all great for bouncing natural light around your room, making it seem more spacious. BOOSTING PHYSICAL SPACE HANG THE TV ON A FLEXIBLE ARM Using a wall bracket for your TV can help save loads of space. BUY MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE To make the most of your space, you need to ensure that nothing is wasting space. For example, having a table to put things on is great, but it'd be even better with built-in shelves and drawers - you could store a lot more in the same area. MOVE CDS AND DVDS INTO STORAGE BOOKS Rather than having huge storage units or bookcases storing all of your CDs and DVDS, purchase books with plastic sleeves and organise your music and films into them. You can typically store over 50 CDs in a single book! MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BEDROOM Invest in under-bed storage containers for out-of-season clothing, and in closet organisers that separate different types of clothing, accessories and footwear. DON'T HIDE JUNK IN YOUR GARAGE Whilst many use a garage for storing unwanted items, you could maximise the space in your home by getting rid of old furniture or broken appliances and then moving other items into your garage to replace them. ORGANISE YOUR GARAGE The garage is probably the one room of your house (if you're lucky enough to have one) that doesn't need to look beautiful, and doesn't need psychological tricks to make it look nicer. Make the most of every inch of storage by installing overhead ceiling racks, along with other large shelving units.
