interior desgn A history of from 1152 to the current day Gothic 1152 1500 Gothic style was popular during the Middle Ages and was characterised by its rich colours along with the elements of fantasy incorporated into architecture and decor Features: Dark walls, ceilings and floors A sense of luxury and grandeur • Ornate fireplaces • Intricate detailing Colours: Influencer: Abbot Suger, a French abbot-statesmen, was seen as one of the leaders in Gothic Architecture and is known for his rebuild of the Church of Saint-Denis Iconic Piece: Stain glass windows were popular because of Gothic styles' with the church. notations Rococo 1700-1780 Originating in Paris, Rococo style is characterised by its elegant designs and curved lines influenced by nature. Features: Mirrors were used lavishly Colours: Coloured marble • Decorative painted ceilings Influencer: Juste-Aurèle Meissonier, a French interior decorator, architect and goldsmith who was one of the leaders in Rococo decorative style. Iconic Piece: Lavish chairs with luxurious upholstering and a lacquer or gold frame. Georgian 1714 1837 Georgian style often included symmetrical shapes and an airy lightness as well as being influenced by other design styles and countries. Features: Colours: Symmetrical design • Ornate carvings • Luxurious fabrics Influencer: Robert Adam, a British architect, interior designer and furniture designer and who's work included Kenwood house. Iconic Piece: Slender, curved tables and chairs, often in darker wood. Victorian 1837 1901 With its eclectic mix of styles, Victorian interior design features elements of many periods combined including Gothic and Rococo. Features: Colours: • Excessive ornamentation and decoration Plush fabrics • Wallpaper Influencer: William Morris, an English artist and designer who is famous for his textile arts and patterns. Iconic Piece: Overstuffed chairs - the more plush the better Arts & Crafts 1850 1914 This movement was a result of designers and artists wanting quality, hand crafted goods as opposed to mass produced pieces. Colours: Features: Use of high quality materials • Simple forms Evident inspiration form natural forms Influencer: William De Morgan, an English potter and tile maker who worked with William Morris. Iconic Piece: Sturdy handmade chairs, often made out of Oak and frequently featuring copper and leather. Art Nouveay 1880 - 1910 Originating in Paris before swiftly spreading to London, Art Nouveau was highly influenced by the natural word. Features: Colours: • Curved lines • Organic shapes • Asymmetry Influencer: Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish artist, architect and designer famous for his influential and romantic style which is still popular today. Iconic Piece: Tiffany Lamps and other stained leaded glass designs. Modernism 1880 1940 Especially popular in Europe, Modernism was based around the idea of designing objects and interiors for a purpose or function and less about the ornamentation. Colours: Features: • The use of new materials such as steel, glass and concrete • Modular simple furniture • Smooth finishes and open plan architecture Influencer: Le Corbusier, a Swiss-French painter, architect, designer and urban planner who created Modernist style buildings were constructed throughout the world. Iconic Piece: Glass walls Art Deco 1910 1939 Popular between the first and second World Wars, Art Deco was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau and widely adopted. Features: Colours: • Geometric and streamline shapes • Recurring motifs such as sunrises, shells and flowers • The use of expensive imported materials such as ivory, bronze and precious stones Influencer: Eileen Gray, an Irish architect and furniture designer who frequently worked with the popular material lacquer. AW Iconic Piece: Decorative flooring. Bauhaus 1919-1933 Bauhaus interior design focused on the goal of creating economic and adaptable designs, much of which was multipurpose. Features: Colours: • Regular, repetitive forms • Functionality • Notable absence ornamentation • Simple forms, lines and shapes Influencer: Josef Albers, a German born American artists who is known for his use of colour and shape as well as his work as a teacher. Iconic Piece: Stackable or multipurpose pieces. Minimalism 1950's - 1978 With a 'less is more' approach, Minimalism focuses on stripping interior design down to achieve simplicity. Features: Colours: • Open spaces • Simplicity • White is a dominating colour • Simple basic shapes Influencer: Tadao Ando, a self-taught Japanese architect whose style is often described as critical regionalism. Iconic Piece: Clean, simple architecture. Scandinavian Modern 1930 – To Date Reaching its peak in the 1950's, Scandinavian Modern design developed around the same time as modernism and is still huge today. Features: • White walls • Ikea is the pinnacle of Scandinavian design • Wooden floor boards • The mix of old and new Colours: Influencer: Alvar Aalto, a Finnish architect, designer, sculptor and painter and was one of the first influential figures of the movement. Iconic Piece: Light curved wooden chairs. Shabby Chic 1990 - To Date 1990- To Date Originating in the UK, Shabby Chic has grown more and more popular throughout the 2000's and focuses on the use of distressed pieces to create a cosy look. Features: Colours: • Often incorporates a cottage style or period feel • Features a softer palette including pastels • Appliques and other embellishment is popular Influencer: Rachel Ashwell is an English author, designer and entrepreneur who founded a company and shop called Shabby Chic in 1989 and continues to sell her designs today. Iconic Piece: Drawers, tables and other furniture with a worn look.
