Historų and Evolution of Elevators modern day architecture. Since the dawn of time, mankind has sought for ways that would facilitate vertical transportation to various levels. Elevators are one of the major inventions that form an important part of The history of the elevator dates back to the 3rd century BC. Primitive elevators were called hoists. Hoists were operated by human, animal, or water wheel power. THE EARLIEST FORM OF ELEVATOR The first recorded inventor of the elevator is the Greek mathematician Archimedes who created an elevator based on pulleys and winches, probably in 236 BC. Elevators In the late 18th centucy, the Russian scientist lvan Kublin created the ficst elevatot for passenger use. in the 18th Century Elevators in the 19th Century Steam-driven to hydraulic power elevators were used from about the middle of the 19th century. Based on an idea from Sir lWilliam Thompson, Sir William Armstrong introduced the hydraulic crane in 1846. In the early 1870s, the hydraulic crane was replaced by steam-powered elevator. EVOLUTION OF THE FIRST PASSENGER SAFETY ELEVATOR In the year 1852, Elisha Graves Otis invented the first safety elevator. In 1854, Elisha Graves Otis demonstrated his safety elevator publicly for the first time at the Crystal Palace Exposition in New York City. In 1857, Elisha Otis and the Otis Elevator Company began manufacturing passenger elevators. In 1857, the first Otis passenger elevator was in operation at a New City five-story department store owned by E.W Haughtwhat & Company of Manhattan. ELECTRIC ELEVATORS Towards the end of the 19th century, electric elevators came into use. The first electric elevator was built by the German inventor Werner von Siemens in 1880. Elevators in the 20th Century MANY CHANGES IN ELEVATOR DESIGN AND INSTALLATION WERE MADE. MOTOR TECHNOLOGY AND CONTROL METHODS EVOLVED RAPIDLY. IN 1903, THE GEARLESS TRACTION ELECTRIC ELEVATOR WAS INTRODUCED. LEVATORS WITH MORE CHOICES AND OPTIONS WERE DESIGNED. Elevator technology has evolved in leaps and bounds. Over the years, elevators have developed into safe and self-sufficient systems. Now residential and commercial elevators have become an indispensable part of our everyday lives. Customers have more choices now than ever before. With buildings rising to ever-greater heights, elevator manufacturers are designing elevators with unique and innovative features to meet these challenges.
