THE MOMENTS OF INDEPENDENCE The day Vasco Da Gama discovered the Silk Route, India was destined to be a captive country under the British rule. Lets recapitulate some of the notable milestones in the Indian War of Independence. The First War of Independence This was a flicket. Heaps of hatred and anger was being gathered against the British. Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier serving under the British Rule, revolted for the first time, thus setting the stage.for. the major revolutions that were to follow. Formation of The INC A party that was supposedly formed to bridge the gap between the ruling English and the Indian people. It still remains a significant and dominant political force in India. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Most heinous crime committed against humanity in the name of law. More than 100 people were injured and more than 300 people killed in the Jal- lianwala Bagh massacre in Punjab. British rule was reddened with the blood of the innocents. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or Gandhiji, started his own way of dealing with the inhuman Britishers. He started the Civil Disobedience Gandhi's Way Movement and Passive Resistance. Boycott Movement The Salt March On March 12, 1930, Indian Independence leader Mohan- das Gandhi began a defiant march to the sea in protest of the British monopoly on salt. Gandhiji started boycotting British goods, especially tex- tiles. He also encouraged homespun clothing known as Khadi. Non-Cooperation Movement Under Gandhijji's leadership, this movement aimed at resisting British through "Ahimsa". Satyagraha Gandhiji followed the path of Ahimsa or Non-violence in the face of British torture. This made the British stand in a difficult position. "Cooperation in any shape or form with this satanic government is sinful" The INA (Indian National Army) And along came a leader... Netaji. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. A patriotic hero of the Indian Independence movement. He formed the Indian Na- tional Army and stood against the British Rule valiantly. He im- bibed the youths of India. Even recruited women in his army. "Give me blood and I will give you Freedom" The Quit India Movement Quit India Movement was a major milestone before the Indian Independence. Though the movement was suppressed with a hard hand, its impacts were massive. Gandhiji's "Do or Die" slogan ignited the minds of the common Indians. By the end of 2nd World War, mood of the British Empire had changed. They incurred huge losses in the War. By early1946,: h they freed all the political prisoners held in India. Finally, India won its freedom on 15th August 1947. DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA POST INDEPENDENCE India has gone through a long way struggling, to make her mark in the world. Let us have a brief glance at the achievements made by India in various sectors. Agriculture Employment Today India's agriculture is self sufficient, thus helping in the export of many agricultural products in different parts of the world. Modern machinery as well as hybrid seeds have helped goal further. The industrial growth as well as that of the service sector has provided great opportunities for employment in India. Growth in Education as well as that in achieve the Industries have increased the job prospects. Industry India's Atomic Energy India has walked a long way and benefitted greatly from the Industrial policy of 1948. From khadi and village industries, to heavy industries of today, shows India's emphatic journey. We have industrialists like the Tatas, Amabanis and many more bringing laurels to the Indian economy. Dr. Homi Bhabha started the nuclear science research in India after conceptualizing Indian nuclear program. India has emerged as a responsible and mature country in this field through the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Education During the initial years of Independence the percentage of literacy was only 30%. Today we have 65% literates and an increasing rate of growth in percentage of women. Education upto 14 years of age is now mandatory as declared by the Government. Mid-day meal and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan are a few schemes of Goverment to enhance Education. Science &Technology Since the days of Aryabhatta till today, it has actually been a very succesful journey. India with all her GSLVS, PSLVS and also the INSAT series have opened a way for easier communication development. Our scientists have not only explored the moon but have also invented a lot more in other fileds of medicines, missiles and also the IT Women Welfare sector. India's women are no longer only tied up to their kitchens. We have women as teachers, lawyers, executives, ministers, pilots and what more, even as our President; a reason that inculcates a lot of pride in Indians. Conclusion India is a secular country with a huge diversity in culture, language as well as religious faith. It is this unique diversity that holds us together as if adding to the essence of being a true Indian. Today we have achieved a lot but this is not all. We stilI have a long way to go and work unitedly, irrespective of all differences to achieve a land where there would be peace, education, employment and of course, FOOD FOR EACH AND EVERY INDIAN.
