Modern Family: how U.S households have changed since the 1970's

MODERN FAMILY The U.S. Census Bureau just released a report on America's families and living arrangements. Here's how U.S. households have changed since the 1970s: Fewer married couples had children in 2012 than ever before. The share of households of married couples with children more than halved since 1970. The proportion of the population that live with at least one relative has also fallen. Sixty-six percent of households in 2012 were family households in 2012, down from 81 percent in 1970. 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 2012 Married Couples 40.3% 30.9% 29.8% 28.7% 28.8% 29.1% Without Children 24.1% Married Couples 26.3% 20.9% 19.6% 29.9% With Children 30.3% Other Family 17.4% 17.8% Households 16.7% (Single Parents, etc) 14.9% 14% Women Living 14.8% 15.2% 14.8% Alone 11.5% 14.8% 12.9% Men Living 10.6% 11.9% 12.3% 10.7% Alone 9.7% 8.6% 5.6% Other Non-Family 5.7% 6.2% 6.1% 3.6% 4.6% Households 1.7% More people are choosing to live alone than ever before. The proportion of one-person households increased by 10 percentage points in the same time, from 17 percent to 27 percent. The size of the average American household has shrunk from 3.1 people to 2.6 people since 1970: 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 2012 2 people 28.9% 31.4% 32.3% 33.1% 33.6% 33.8% 20.9% 22.7% 24.6% 1 person 25.5% 26.7% 27.4% 17.3% 17.5% 17.3% 16.4% 15.9% 3 people 15.9% 17.1% 15.7% 14.5% 14.6% 4 people 13.7% 13.3% 15.8% 12.8% 10.4% 10.4% 10.1% 5 people or more 9.6% American household structure saw a dramatic shift between 1970 and 1980 -- the number of households with five or more people decreased dramatically and the single-person households increased. This trend continues, as the average household size continues to decrease.
