The History of Air Conditioning
The History O8 Air Conditioning Circa: 1758 An experiment by Benjamin Franklin and Cambridge's John Hadley reveals that evaporation of volatile liquids can reduce an object's temperature below the freezing point of water. ICE Circa: 1902 "Father of air conditioning" Willis Circa: 1830 Haviland Carrier invents a machine to control temperature and humidity for the Buffalo Forge Company, preventing misalignment of four-color printing. The device is a precursor to his patented "Apparatus for Treating Air" (1906). John Gorrie manufactures ice by compressing and then rapidly expanding air. He then forces air over the ice to cool a room. Carrier Circa: 1914 Charles Gilbert Gates of Minneapolis becomes the first individual to air-condition his own home. The first home machineswere dangerous due to use of toxic ammonia. Circa: 1931 H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman unveil a more compact air-conditioner. Like many of those still in use today, it is designed for a window ledge. Circa: 1939 Packard Motor Car Company offers the first automobile to include air-conditioning as a optional feature, though without internal controls. Circa: 1970 Central air cooling systems - with condenser, coils, and a fan - are developed. The systems use Freon, developed by Dupont, as a cooling agent. Freon is later replaced with more environmentally friendly chemicals when it is found to be destructive to the ozone layer.
